Appoint an Emergency Contact
- Arrange for someone to collect mail and newspaper or Contact the US Post Office and your local newspaper and ask to have your mail held and services suspended.
- If family member or friend will collect your mail and paper instruct them to do daily, as full mailboxes and porches can tip potential burglars.
- Place various house lights on a timer to give impression someone is home.
Entrust this Emergency contact person with your trip itinerary, contact information, and leave written instructions for alarm codes in the event a problem arises.
Take Plumbing and Electric Precautions
- Adjust your thermostat for the season this will help control usage and maintain proper temperatures in your home.
- Double check smoke detectors to ensure they are functioning properly.
- Unplug electronics this will guard against possible shortages, which could potentially cause a fire.
- Turn off the water valves to appliances, sinks and toilets
- Prevent leaks and water damage from the source by shutting off water at the meter, supply tanks or appliances. Your local water company can help with this.
